on a hat

I found this on the floor after it had been whipped across the room, not at me. I gasped because of the fleur-de-lis. The student to whom it belonged is rurally but intensely proud of his Italian heritage. When he found out it was the national symbol of France, he poo-pooed it asking if there were an Italian equivalent. I said that the symbol is shared among many nations, and that it is likely to be on any number of coat-of-arms, seals, stamps etc.. for the regions of Italy. He seemed more comfortable with that.
